I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the newest addition to our household - Cricket!2
She's a lemon.A lemon beagle, that is - apparently that's what her color is called. But I also think she must've been something of a hunting dud, because why else would my uncle-in-law get a new dog and give her to us? And I have to say, she's a total wimp. I do not really care for wimpy dogs.
When he described her, Uncle Jimmy called her "docile." I think the word he was actually looking for was "pansy."
Luckily, the things that make her a wimp also make her a really good housedog.

One of those things included a fear of stairs."Great!" I said. "We don't have to worry about her getting in the bedrooms!" (Sleeping with us was completely outlawed from the beginning.)
Two days later I heard a whimper while I was upstairs showering. Yes, Cricket had managed to conquer her fears and go up the stairs.
The fear she couldn't conquer was going back down them. I ended up carrying her down. Wimp.
That evening she did it again. We decided to use tough love and make her come down herself. After almost an hour of cajoling, ignoring, calling, ignoring, leaving treats, and ignoring, she managed to come down.
She didn't learn. The next day she went up again. This time it only took 25 minutes of me ignoring her whimpering for her to muster the courage to come down. I guess this is an improvement.

Cricket has made a liar out of me. I swore I would never clean up a dog's poop. The first day, on our first walk, I had to do it three times.5
I have the world's best husband. He takes her out first thing in the morning and last thing at night, while I stay warm and dry in my pajamas inside.6
All you dog-lovers probably think I'm a terrible person by now. In my defense, I'm only used to outdoor dogs. As in, run around on the farm, never set foot in the house, never take for walks, and absolutely never clean up after them, big, happy, goofy dogs. This whole little-housedog-in-suburbia thing is new for me.I'm gradually getting used to it. For instance, the first day I washed my hands between touching the dog and anything else - computer, food, dishes, my face. I probably washed them 15 times. By this morning, I was able to pet the dog and then eat a brownie without washing. I was very impressed with myself.

It sounds like I hate this dog, but I don't. I do like her. The main reason I'm so ambivalent towards her is because she doesn't smile. Note that in every one of these pictures she has this serious face. The corners of her mouth have never even hinted at an upward direction!I know she's happy, because her tail is wagging and we're petting her and whatnot. She just doesn't smile to show it. I keep telling her if she'd only smile I'd fall in love with her.
I'm one of those always-smiling, positive attitude, ever-the-optimist types. To have a dog that doesn't smile breaks my heart! So can anyone tell me if this not smiling is a factor of just being in a new place for the first week, or if it's a personality trait I'm going to have to learn to live with?

Yay for the new addition to your family! That dog is so cute!
ReplyDeleteI would imagine that she'll become less nervous in her surroundings soon and show some smiley faces. It seems like any dogs I've gotten have been somewhat smiley to begin with, so it may be a personality trait, but if she's a bit timid anyway, it may just take a little longer for her to open up with you.
ReplyDeleteI talk like I know what I'm saying. When the truth is...I'm not a dog person. I'd take an aloof and simple cat anyday. (As long as they stay out of the baby's room :)) But Cricket is a cutie. Enjoy getting to know her!
She's cute. Beagles have such soft fur.
ReplyDeleteI too grew up with exclusively outside, farm dogs. If we ever get a dog, I think it will live in the yard and have a doggy door into the basement. I could not handle I dog in my house.
Awww, so cute! I love the last picture!
ReplyDeleteYou ate a brownie for breakfast?!
ReplyDeleteShe is such a cute pup! I think she will get more affectionate with time. Sirius was really timid and clingy the first few weeks we had him (he wouldn't even go outside in the yard by himself) but not he'll go out there for like an hour alone.
ReplyDeleteYour heart will keep melting toward her, a little at a time, haha. :)
She looks like she is smiling in the photo of you and her!
ReplyDeletePS - I still wash my hands after petting my dog. I wasn't raised with dogs either, so I just have to do it!
She is very cute! She does look somewhat serious, but I agree with everyone else that she'll probably loosen up and smile sooner than later. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteHahaha...Cricket and Chandler sound SO much alike! Chandler is afraid of the dumpster outside...and the statue of the Holy Family my mom had outside her house for Christmas....and cats....and loud noises (he shakes like a leaf!) Good luck with your new addition!
ReplyDeleteWhen he described her, Uncle Jimmy called her "docile." I think the word he was actually looking for was "pansy."
ReplyDeleteLOL!
If you have any of the optimism bottled up, then I'd love to forward you my mailing address. ;)
My son Alex keeps asking for a dog. Daddy and Mommy say, NO! I grew up with outdoor farm cats and he grew up with indoor dogs, and from our combined experiences we both know we want absolutely nothing to do with indoor pets. LOL Wonder how we're going to handle requests for goldfish, guinea pigs, etc.? ;)
ReplyDeleteI find it so funny that you're bothered by the fact that your dog is a wimp. I would so much rather have a pansy dog than one that is all over the place with energy and curiosity! At least cricket sounds like she'll work well with a baby in the house since she'll probably hide from him/her!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute dog! I love Beagles! congrats!!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I'm not used to indoor dogs or pansy dogs!:) Although, if I was going to have an indoor dog, it does seem to be the way to go.
ReplyDeletebeautiful dog!
ReplyDeleteMight I suggest you looking into Cesar Milan (the Dog Whisperer?) you can watch it on hulu!
LOL! The whole hand washing thing is sooo me!!! Cricket reminds me of my Snoopy- very cute! Have fun with your new "little one"! :)
ReplyDeleteyour attitude really is quite disgusting. and calling anyone a pansy is totally unchristian. I used to love reading your blog, I've never commented before. but I don't think I will be reading anymore.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why anyone with your attitude towards dogs would push your husband so much to get one. I love my dog like he's a little person. Although, he's four pounds and sometimes needs to wear a sweatshirt to keep warm, so I'm sure you would also consider him a "pansy."
Being a Catholic, I was always taught that you should be kind to all of God's creatures. And it really bothers me when I see people treat animals as if God put them here to serve us.
Well, it looks like "puppy lover" is a pseudonym for PETA (that's the website that link takes you to), and we all know how "Christian" they are, what with hiring a Catholic model to pose nude with a crucifix over her body...so, I guess you need to get to confession immediately Elizabeth because you don't think your dog is a human who needs a sweater.
ReplyDeleteAlso, calling a human a pansy, uncharitable. Calling a dog a pansy, on the Internet, where I'm sure she'll never read it, because she's not human, not uncharitable.
And, here you go: "God said, have dominion over every fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." - Genesis 1:28
Now we can argue about what dominion means, but I'd be willing to bet my dog that it doesn't mean treating him like a human.
